Adventures with Chickens

I had no idea chicks were so entertaining. We are rookies at this. We read up, watched videos and talked to friends. We talked about it last year but never got it done. Finally this year we took the plunge and bought eight little chicks. So far so good. They seem to be healthy and growing. We have a few Cochin varieties, an Iowa Blue,  and Easter Eggers. We learned the first week laying when a chick lays on their side and  is acting weird isn't fatal. We were concerned about one. Then it stopped it and another one did it.  They seem fine now.
One I have named Penguin, so far we also have Peep, Fancy Feet,  and Sunny, yes they’re getting names. I see egg laying companions not butchering.

To get them used to our voices and presence we have been sparingly giving them treats. They love strawberries! The grab a piece and run away to hide it. Now we just say chick chick chick and they come running.
They need grit too, so we have a dish of yard to peck at and dust in..dust they do.It will build up their immunities hopefully. My plan is to raise them as naturally as possible. We have a brooder set up in the garage, with their feed and water. Hubby is building a coop and run

The girls have been so responsible and helpful with the chicks. They're having a ball, and I am thrilled to have pets that don't come inside.

next week.

Recess-

Today it was finally warm and sunny with low winds. We took them outside for a chick recess. They seemed to enjoy it quite a bit, and are now napping. Little escape artist in my make shift garden fencing and dog pen play yard. We only kept them outside about a 1/2 hour. Get them used to it gradually. They are now napping, sleeping off their adventure. After cleaning the bin and chasing them, I'm thinking a nap is a pretty good plan. To all the other mother hens, Happy mother's day!
